Which antacid neutralizes the stomach the
quickest?
Aim: to see which antacid can neutralize the
stomach the quickest and if baking soda can be used as an antacid
Hypothesis: I think the Gaviscon will be the fastest and
that baking soda can act as an antacid to neutralize the stomach
Independent:
the different antacids that are going in the HCL
Dependent:
to measure the color of the indicator
Control:
the amount of antacid and the HCL
Method:
1. put on your
safety goggles and lab coats
2. set up all your equipment
3. put the test tubes into the
test tube holders
4. measure the HCL correctly into
the test tubes (IT MUST BE THE SAME AMOUNT)
5. Crush tablets into a fine powdery solution
6. Use the universal indicator to
measure the ph in each test tubes (just to be sure)
7. Put the crushed tablets into
water (it must be the same amount as the water) and mix it together to form an
alkaline solution
8. Pour it into the test tubes
and mix together
9. Take a small amount of the
mixture and add it to the universal indicator in the spotting tile to see which
color it changes to and what happens to it (how it reacts e.g frizzy, bubbly
e.t.c )
10. Get your timer and start timing immediately
the first mixture of antacid and hydrochloric acid goes in
11. Observe it and wait for what
happens to it in 1 min, 2 min and 3 min and write it down in the table of
observation
12. Repeat step 7 to 11 to the
rest of the antacids

Conclusion
MY
HYPOTHESIS WAS CORRECT BECAUSE THE BAKING SODA CAN BE USED AS AN ANTACID AND
WAS THE FASTEST IN THE FOUR BUT THE GAVISCON WAS SLOW AND EXTREMELY LUMPY
PROBABLY BECAUSE OUR CALCULATIONS WAS EXTREMELY WRONG, WE CALCULATED THAT 4
GAVISCON TABLETS WILL BE THE SAME AMOUNT AS 1 TABLET OF THE OTHER ANTACID AND
INSTEAD OF INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF ACID WE DIDN’T. THEN WHEN WE SAW THE
MIXTURE WAS TO LUMPY WE ADDED MORE HYDROCHLORIC ACID AND DID NOT MEASURE IT
WHICH WAS A GREAT MISTAKE
